The Holy Bible --- Parallel New Testament, A.J. Holman & Co., Philadelphia, 1887.

Inscription on the Inside of the Front Cover: "A Christmas Present to Mrs. M.F. Case by Marion Case Dec. 25, 1888."

This family bible has been passed down from my great-great-grandfather Marion Fletcher Case. In the middle of the book are several pages with birth, marriage, and death information. Some of the original entries were added to or modified by my grandmother many, many years back. What she wrote will be enclosed by < > and written in smaller text. I have written the entries below the way that they actually appear. At the bottom I have included some of my own information from research I have done on the CASE family.

The rest of the CASE information below is from my own research on the family.

Five-generation tree of my grandmother, Frances Lydia CASTELHUN. The CASE, FITCHETT, and SIMMONDS lines go as far back as I have information so far. The CASTELHUN line does go further back.

Gasham Case CASE was married to: Susan M. FITCHETT & Samantha WELLS. Gasham was a Mormon and he had these wives at the same time. There were at least nine children by Susan FITCHETT, daughter of John & Esther FITCHETT, and at least three by Samantha WELLS. Susan M. FITCHETT was born in Walnut Landing, Dorchester County, Maryland. Family legend has said that her father (now found to be a John FITCHETT) was the governor of Maryland. I have not confirmed that yet.

Marion Fletcher CASE was married to: Harriet Maria SIMMONDS & Minnie Frances WINSELL. Marion married Minnie Frances WINSELL, daughter of James Fletcher WINSELL and Rachel COOMBS, after Harriet Maria SIMMONDS died at the age of twenty-nine.

Harriet Maria SIMMONDS appears to have been born in Los Angeles in 1857, though family legend says she was born on a ship. Her family was, though, from Australia, and came to California. She was related to sea captains and traders. Some related names on this line who I have not connected exactly are: McGUIRE, MATHEWS, NORTH, HERWIG, BACON, and HOWLAND.

Minnie Elizabeth CASE was married to: Peter Elba BENTLEY & Paul Roetter CASTELHUN. There was a son, Marion Fletcher BENTLEY, by the first marriage. There was a daughter, Frances Lydia CASTELHUN, by the second. Marion BENTLEY died in the Spanish Flu Pandemic in 1918. Frances CASTELHUN later married Sinclair George TRIMBLE. I have not found out what happened to Peter BENTLEY. Family legend says that he died in an avalanche or cave-in at the Alaskan Yukon Gold Rush. Paul CASTELHUN, a San Francisco doctor, died in 1969.
==========

The following is from a history of Gasham CASE, from the Willows Cemetery District, California. It was provided to them by Barbara DUNN, a great-great-granddaughter of Gasham and Susan CASE.

	Gashum C. Case was born near West Cincinnatti, Hamilton County, Ohio, March 16, 1815. He was the son of Jacob and Elizabeth Case, and married Miss Susan Fitchett near Cincinnatti, Ohio, 1834. [they were remarried (probably as Mormons) in Salt Lake City 7 Sep 1851]. Miss Fitchett was born in Walnut Landing, Dorchester County, Maryland on May 11, 1817, and was the daughter of John and Esther Fitchett. Shortly after their marriage, they moved to West Quincy, Adams County, Illinois, and then to Perry, Pike County, Illinois. In 1841, Mr. and Mrs. Case became members of Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. When the Saints were forced to vacate their homes in Illinois in 1846, he located with other exiled Saints at Winter Quarters where he remained until 1849 when he crossed the plains as Captain of ten wagons in an ox train led by Captain George A. Smith. This Company left Winter Quarters on the bank of the Missouri River July 4th, 1849, and arrived in Salt Lake Valley October 27th, 1849. Only the most capable and trustworthy men were placed as Captains as they were responsible at all times for wagons placed in their care.

	On April 24, 1853 at the little settlement of Palmyra, Utah, Mr. Case was married to Samanthy Wells who was born in Morgan County, Illinois, January 18, 1836. In 1854, Mr. Case and other Saints were transferred to San Bernardino. For several years he hauled freight between Utah and San Bernardino. In 1858 the Saints, who were located in San Bernardino, were instructed to return to Utah and the settlement of San Bernardino as a "Mormon" town was vacated. Most of the faithful Saints obeyed the instruction received, and at the close of 1858 very few members of the church remained in San Bernardino; The Case family did not return to Utah.

	Mrs. Samanthy Case passed away at Peetneck, now Payson, Utah, on March 9, 1860, leaving three children; one baby boy only a few days old. The interment was at Stewart Plot, Payson Cemetery, Payson, Utah.

	Mr. Case was a cooper by trade and although he had never studied medicine, he was often called to aid the sick. During his last illness, he would try to rise from bed to suggest remedies for those who were ill. He was a friend to all. He passed away at the old family home at Eighth and H streets, San Bernardino, on October 20, 1885. Interment was at Pioneer Cemetery, San Bernardino.

	Mrs. Susan Case was the mother of nine children, and after the death of Mrs. Samanthy Case, she brought her three little children into the home and cared for them as if they were her own. After the passing of Mr. Case, she made her home with a son at Willows, California, where she passed away in the early part of 1898. Interment was at the Masonic Cemetery, Willows, California.

	[Gasham] has many descendents, and with the exception of a few, all are living in California.
==========

Gasham also had many brothers and sisters who had descendents. They are spread across the country. According to some U.S. Censuses and family histories, Gasham worked as a laborer, teamster, veterinarian, doctor, cooper, shoemaker, meat and food preserver, wagon train captain. The DODSONs of San Bernardino are also connected to this family through Mary Jane CASE, wife of Elijah DODSON (son of Mattison DODSON and Sarah KING) and daughter of Gasham Case CASE and Susan M. FITCHETT.

Please write to me if you have any information on the CASEs. I also have a lot more information than this (and am discovering more all the time), so write if you have questions. E-mail at TrimbleSTS.
